Chapter 35

1 God said to Jacob: ＂Go up now to Bethel. Settle there and build an altar there to the God who appeared to you while you were fleeing from your brother Esau.＂

天主对雅各伯说：＂起来，上贝特耳去，住在那里，为你昔日逃避你哥哥厄撒乌在那里显现给你的天主，筑一祭坛。＂

2 ¹ So Jacob told his family and all the others who were with him: ＂Get rid of the foreign gods that you have among you; then purify yourselves and put on fresh clothes.

雅各伯便对家人和跟随他的人说：＂你们应除去你们中间所有外邦的神像，并取洁，更换衣服，

3 We are now to go up to Bethel, and I will build an altar there to the God who answered me in my hour of distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone.＂

因为我们要起身上贝特耳去；在那里我要给在我困苦的时日俯听了我，在我所走的路上伴随了我的天主，筑一祭坛。＂

4 ² They therefore handed over to Jacob all the foreign gods in their possession and also the rings they had in their ears.

众人便将自己手中所有外邦的神像，所有的耳环，都交给了雅各伯；雅各伯就都埋在那靠近舍根的橡树底下。

5 Then, as they set out, a terror from God fell upon the towns round about, so that no one pursued the sons of Jacob.

当他们起程出发时，天主叫周围的城邑都非常恐怖，为此谁也不敢追赶雅各伯的儿子。

6 Thus Jacob and all the people who were with him arrived in Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.

这样，雅各伯和与他在一起的人，来到客纳罕地的路次，即贝特耳；

7 There he built an altar and named the place Bethel, for it was there that God had revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.

他在那里筑了一座祭坛。称呼那地方为贝特耳，因为他逃避他哥哥时，天主曾在那里显现给他。

8 ³ Death came to Rebekah's nurse Deborah; she was buried under the oak below Bethel, and so it was called Allonbacuth.

其时黎贝加的乳母德波辣死了，就埋在贝特耳下面的一株橡树底下；为此给这橡树起名叫＂悲泣的橡树。＂

9 On Jacob's arrival from Paddan-aram, God appeared to him again and blessed him.

雅各伯由帕丹阿兰回来后，天主又显现给他，再祝福他。

10 God said to him: ＂You whose name is Jacob shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name.＂ Thus he was named Israel.

天主对他说：＂你原叫雅各伯，但以后不再叫作雅各伯，却要叫作以色列。＂遂给他改名以色列。

11 God also said to him: ＂I am God Almighty; be fruitful and multiply. A nation, indeed an assembly of nations, shall stem from you, and kings shall issue from your loins.

天主又对他说：＂我是全能的天主，你要生育繁殖；不但一个民族，而是一些民族要由你而生，许多君王要由你而生。

12 The land I once gave to Abraham and Isaac I now give to you; And to your descendants after you will I give this land.＂

我将赐给了亚巴郎和依撒格的土地赐给你；我也将这土地赐给你未来的后裔。＂

13 Then God departed from him.

然后天主就在与他谈话的地方，离开他，上升去了。

14 On the site where God had spoken with him, Jacob set up a memorial stone, and upon it he made a libation and poured out oil.

雅各伯在天主与他谈话地方，竖立了一根柱子，一根石柱；在上面行了奠祭，倒上油。

15 Jacob named the site Bethel, because God had spoken with him there.

雅各伯给天主与他谈话的地方起名叫贝特耳。

16 Then they departed from Bethel; but while they still had some distance to go on the way to Ephrath, Rachel began to be in labor and to suffer great distress.

他们由贝特耳起程出发，离厄弗辣大还有一段路程时，辣黑耳要生产，感觉难产。

17 When her pangs were most severe, her midwife said to her, ＂Have no fear! This time, too, you have a son.＂

正当难产之际，收生婆对她说：＂不要怕，你这次还是生个男孩。＂

18 ⁴ With her last breath--for she was at the point of death-she called him Ben-oni; his father, however, named him Benjamin.

辣黑耳将要断气快死的时候，给他起名叫本敖尼；但他的父亲却叫他本雅明。

19 ⁵ Thus Rachel died; and she was buried on the road to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).

辣黑耳死了，葬在去厄弗辣大，即白冷的路旁。

20 Jacob set up a memorial stone on her grave, and the same monument marks Rachel's grave to this day.

雅各伯在她坟上立了一块碑；这块辣黑耳坟上的碑，至今尚存。

21 Israel moved on and pitched his tent beyond Migdal-eder.

以色列又起程前行，在米革达耳厄德尔的那一面支搭了帐幕。

22 While Israel was encamped in that region, Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father's concubine. When Israel heard of it, he was greatly offended. The sons of Jacob were now twelve.

以色列住在那地时，勒乌本竟去与他父亲的妾彼耳哈同睡；以色列后来闻知了此事

23 The sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob's first-born, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun;

肋阿的儿子：雅各伯的长子勒乌本、西默盎、肋未、犹大、依撒加尔和则步隆。

24 ⁶ the sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin;

辣黑耳的儿子：若瑟和本雅明。

25 the sons of Rachel's maid Bilhah: Dan and Naphtali;

辣黑耳的婢女彼耳哈的儿子：丹和纳斐塔里。

26 the sons of Leah's maid Zilpah: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-aram.

肋阿的婢女齐耳帕的儿子：加得和阿协尔：这些都是雅各伯在帕丹阿兰生的儿子。

27 Jacob went home to his father Isaac at Mamre, in Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.

雅各伯来到了克黎雅特阿尔巴，即赫贝龙的玛默勒他父亲依撒格那里，即亚巴郎和依撒格曾寄居过的地方。

28 The lifetime of Isaac was one hundred and eighty years;

依撒格享寿一百八十岁。

29 then he breathed his last. After a full life, he died as an old man and was taken to his kinsmen. His sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

他年高老迈，已享天年，遂断气而死，归到他亲族那里去了；他的儿子厄撒乌和雅各伯将他埋葬了。

¹ [2] Foreign gods: pagan images, including household idols (see note on Genesis 31:19), that Jacob's people brought with them from Paddan-aram.

² [4] Rings: Earrings were often worn as amulets connected with pagan magic.

³ [8] This verse may have stood originally in some other context. Rebekah's nurse is spoken of without a name, in Genesis 24:59. Allon-bacuth: the Hebrew name means ＂oak of weeping.＂

⁴ [18] Ben-oni: means either ＂son of my vigor＂ or, more likely in the context, ＂son of affliction.＂ Benjamin: ＂son of the right hand.＂ This may be interpreted to signify a son who is his father's help and support, but more likely its original meaning was ＂southerner.＂ In the Hebrew idiom, the south lies to one's right hand, and Benjamin was the southernmost of the Rachel tribes.

⁵ [19] Bethlehem: the gloss comes from a later tradition that identified the site with Bethlehem, also called Ephrath or Ephratha (Joshua 15:59; Ruth 4:11; Micah 5:1). But Rachel's grave was actually near Ramah (Jeremiah 31:15), a few miles north of Jerusalem, in the territory of Benjamin (1 Sam 10:2).

⁶ [24-26] Benjamin is here said to have been born in Paddan-aram, either because all twelve sons of Jacob are considered as a unit, or because the Priestly source, from which Genesis 35:23-29 are taken, follows a tradition different from that of the Elohistic source found in Genesis 35:16-20.
