Mexico has a lot of violent crime; much more so than people would be familiar with in Canada (or even the States for that matter), as well as more than people would be familiar with in most places in China. A lot of this violent crime involves drug trafficking and the wars that are fought between the drug cartels and the police, the drug cartels and the people, or between cartels. There are thousands of murders every year in relation to it (the government estimates almost 50,000 since 2006. and this has been criticized by academics as an underestimate), and the country does not seem to have a good handle on controlling the problem. Mexico’s drug cartels are some of the largest and most powerful organized crime syndicates in the world; they have military standard guns, grenades, bombs, boats, submarines, aircraft (including large cargo planes) their own training camps in Central American jungles for new recruits, commanders and hierarchies, intelligence gathering with agents in government and police positions, probably billions of dollars in assets (a guess: consider that one large cargo aircraft can be $100-200 million USD+) and a host of resources that people would not normally associate with a normal criminal gang. All these things are made possible by a huge number of Americans (and other markets) willing to spend a lot of money every year on the drugs they smuggle. In addition to these though, there are also gangs of a much smaller nature found in Mexico that are involved with smaller scale ‘business’. Among these criminal businesses, is the practice of kidnapping and getting ransom money. The article I link to above is in relation to an affair related to such a gang. In the city of Chalco, which is a suburb city to Mexico city, there was a small group of men who were in the process of kidnapping some school children, and they were discovered by a local woman who sounded the alarm. The church bells were rang, and a large group of people arrived in the area and apprehended the men. The vigilantes then took these men, three of them, dragged them to the city square, doused them with petrol and set them on fire. One of them was rescued by police, but he died shortly after in hospital. In Canada such a thing would be unheard of, for the most part. If it were to happen, I think it would make national news, everyone would be talking about it and it would be repeated for a long time. This did make the news in Mexico, but it was probably not such a big story – this is because this is not really so rare or unheard of that people would be so shocked by it. Mexican society unfortunately really has that much violence in it. I remember when I was in Canada, I once read the Toronto star telling a story about some cops from Tijuana who visited Toronto, and the police in Toronto were talking about ‘the year of the gun’, when the city had a record number of gun murders (52) in 2005. The Mexican cops then replied that in Tijuana they have about five gun murders a day (1800+ a year), and that’s only counting the ones that are discovered. Mexico, unlike, Canada, is also a roman catholic country, which a huge portion (80-90% maybe) professing to be roman catholic. Why is it like this? Why is it that a country that has the true faith and believes it has so much violence in its society in comparison with a country that doesn’t? It is not just this example either. Look at the history of the country, from the atrocities of the conquistadores, the abuses that occurred under colonialism, the corruption, violence and other problems since independence, etc. And there are many examples of terrible things done by Catholics. This helps demonstrate a very important point that Catholics (and other kinds of Christians) ought to understand: belief is not enough. Simply going to church and professing to believe, does not actually make a person good, unless after leaving the church the person puts into practice the same lessons of love and justice that he hears in the church.。 If he doesn’t, then what he believes is not enough to save him. A person who does what’s right and doesn’t know the truth about God is more acceptable in God’s eyes than a person who does what’s wrong and is a baptized, church-going believer. Even if everyone in the world believed in God, even if everyone in the world believed in Jesus, even if everyone in the world believed in the catholic church- it wouldn’t mean anything towards making a better world, necessarily, unless people actually put the teachings into practice. For this reason, Mexico, despite being overwhelmingly catholic has these kinds of problems. For this reason, much of western history is filled with so much sin despite the fact it believed a religion that condemned what they did. There is a part of the letter of James in the new testament that talks about how faith without works is dead. It says at one point ‘you believe in God, you do well, but even the demons believe’ 圣经的雅各伯书当中有一部分说‘信德没有行为也是死的’。 Satan believes in God. Satan believes that Jesus is the messiah and the Son of God. Satan believes that the Catholic Church is the church established by God. Satan believes the Eucharist is the body and blood of Jesus. Satan’s belief in these things is stronger than the most pious of all believers of Jesus. Matthew 7: 21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ 23 “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.’
